Garrett's Games 141 - BGG.con with Derk & Aldie

Derk and Aldie join Shelley and me on the microphones at BGG.con last Friday.  Discussion of the convention, along with a focus on Ghost Stories (which we had just played), makes up much of the episode.

There's more to come from BGG.con, though!  Shelley and I had a fantastic time and spent much of it playing new games off the Essen table.  MANY of reviews and commentaries to come, along with PRIZES, so listen to NEXT WEEK'S EPISODE to find out about the Great 2008 Holiday Contest - maybe something new will be arriving at YOUR door soon!

Enjoy!

Doug

Thanks again for another great podcast. For some reason I like the audio reviews of games from a group of people much more than a written review. I get a better impression about what the game is really like. Just the attitudes and the voice inflections say so much about the "fun" factor of a game. So, now I am interested in Ghost Stories. There are just too many co-op games to choose from now. I have enjoyed Shadows and Pandemic so I am sure I will enjoy at least some of these games. Doug, what do you think about Ghost Stories and young kids (age 10). Too scary? Too hard?

My copy of Le Havre has not made it yet from Germany. But it sounds like I may like it but I am worried that may in my group may not since it lacks what they liked from Agricola.

    Thanks again,

I'm right there with you on my love of audio reviews in a group - I love the interplay of voices as we (or other podcasts) discuss the game.  Unlike text you get much more of an idea about what to expect.

As for your question about too scary or too hard - I'd say "No" to the first point and "Maybe" to the second.  As you heard Aldie say (or maybe that wasn't on mic...) Pandemic has become an easy win for him since he's played it a number of times.  He's now played Ghost Stories 8 times and never won.  And that's at the "standard" setting, not the "nightmare" setting that some have tried it at.  The graphics are "spooky" but not fear-inducing, IMO.

As for Le Havre, I still haven't played it with anyone (did a 1/2 game demo for myself), but I think you should hold off on the "must buy!" urge and wait for the domestic release at the very least.  It's much more of a 'deep think' game as Derk alluded to.
